James S. Haviland, a birthright Quaker, was born in 1849, the son of William F. and Sarah Ann (Carpenter) Haviland of Purchase Monthly Meeting (N.Y.). In 1874 he married Elizabeth Griffen, daughter of Henry. They had two daughters, Martha G. and Louise E.; the latter married J. Barnard Walton in 1910. From the description of Papers 1754-1931.
